WHAT IS CUT OFF MARK? SEE BEST DEFINITION

Cut off mark is a set up or organize laid up point that is set by individual institution to govern the acceptance of student into any tertiary institution.

What is cut off mark is a question that most student are asking.

The management of each school has a set up point which is call cut off marks and in this article, I will try to explain to my best of knowledge what the set up point is, how departmental and jamb cut off marks is calculated and some necessary guild.

WHAT IS JAMB CUT OFF MARK?

Jamb as we all know means joint admission and matriculation board, it is a body that Is organized in other to control the vast majority of student entering into the university in nigeria.

The body controls the number of student by setting a minimum level called cut off mark which student needs to get to before gaining admission.

Each year, the minimum level is either adjust higher or reduce for student to be able to meet up.

The joint admission and matriculation board also gives student the opportunity to fore check if a school still has application slot before applying, to reduce the competition rate.

Jamb cut off mark is the point which the management of the joint admission and matriculation board set up for all institutions in the country which student must meet to be able to access application in any choice university.

A good example is that, if jamb set this year cut off mark to be 200 for all university,  any student in nigeria that score below 200 or even 199 will not be consider for admission for this year.

It is as simple as that. I hope you understand.

WHAT IS DEPARTMENTAL CUT OFF POINT?

Departmental cut off mark is the same as jamb cut off mark but in this term, the cut off point is not set only by jamb but by the institution in collaboration with jamb.

Using the university of benin as an example, if a student is aspiring to gain admission into uniben, he/she is made to first write jamb exam and then meet up the cut off set by jamb(assuming it is 200).

Then the student is made to write the school post UTME exam and supposing the student score 60, then the calculation is done as follows

HOW TO CALCULATE DEPARTMENTAL MARKS

Firstly jamb Marks your questions by multiplying your total score by 2. So supposing you score 200 out of your 200 questions, your jamb score is 400.

If you then score 50 in post UTME, to calculate it, your jamb score will be divided by 8 and your utme score by 2 then add both together and that is your UTME score.

So 400/8 equals 50 and then post UTME is 50/2 which equals 25 therefore the sum total is 75 and so for uniben post UTME, that is a good score.

And so if you are going for engineering which has a minimum departmental cut off mark of 50, then you have an upper hand to gain admission.
