The National Examinations Council is the leading examining board in Nigeria, established by law in 1999 as one of the last acts of the General AbdulsalamiAbubakar military administration.

This ushered in a national examinations outfit for the country that was mandated to conduct reliable examinations internally, which could command both national and international respect and acceptability.

By its mandate, was to take over the responsibilities of the National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM) which was created, in 1992, by the Ibrahim Babangida administration, although its enabling decree was promulgated in 1993.

For some student, the exam serve as a substitute for acceptance into higher Institutions. While others who prefer to study within the country only enrol for the NECO exam.

However, the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) which had been the exclusive preserve of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) was made an additional responsibility of the new examination outfit.


The NECO was to take exclusive charge of the conduct of the SSCE for school based candidates while WAEC was to take charge of the same examination for private candidates.

The conducting of the NECO  SSCE exam started at about  mid 2000. In recent times,  the examination bodies have taken SSCE for several schools and both their certificates are valid.

The NECO exam body also conduct various exam in nigeria which are internally aand externally.

The following examinations are conducted by the body.

  • National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE)
  • Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal and External.

The body has serve as much achievement to various institutions and individuals. apart from conducting exam for student, the NECO body has also serve as source of income to various nigeria citizens thereby reducing the rate of poverty in the country. It is sure that not everybody agrees or like the exam, yet as a body it has and will be of service to the national citizens.

The exam is a valid exam that can be written as an entrance examination into any choice university. It can either serve as a substitute to the waec or a stand alone exam to any university.
