Other necessary things to note about alkanes is that: The first four member are gases at room temperature, the subsequent members (from C5 to C17) are liquids which become viscous with increasing length of chain and the higher homologoues are solid.
Alkanes are non polar compounds, they are insoluble in water but soluble in benzane and tetrachloromethane.
The Alkanes are generally inert and underactive at room temperature because there is no functional grouping their molecule.
But under certain conditions such as high temperature, catalyst and sunlight, they will react properly.
I hope this brief tip has been able to give you an insite income naming alkanes and most of all their characteristics. For better understanding of the alkanes SERIES, you can do some read up on my blog about alkanes or learn to use mnemonic.
Try to develop your own mnemonic for the series and do not only participate in the alkane quiz of element identification, try and memorize most of the questions.
If you fail any of the quiz question, do try and take it again and again until you become perfect in name it.
